ILLUM WIKELSOE
(1919 – 1999)
Illum Wikkelsø (often spelled Wikelsoe) was a Danish furniture designer celebrated for his sculptural modernism and impeccable craftsmanship. Educated as a cabinetmaker and later trained in architecture at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, he began his career with A. P. Stolen and later became head designer at Eilersen before founding his own studio in the 1950s. Wikkelsø’s work embodied the organic elegance of Danish modern design — fluid lines, natural materials, and a strong sense of proportion. His lounge chairs, sofas, and cabinets combined comfort with refined construction, emphasizing the harmony between form and function. Deeply rooted in craftsmanship yet forward-looking in form, his designs remain enduring examples of mid-century Danish furniture artistry.
